Is the existence of MAGIC fact or illusion?

Jadu (Magic) is actually a famous word of Urdu language. In Arabic, magic is called “Sahar”and in English“Magic”. Scholars have described the meaning of magic as deceiving, tricking, changing the reality of something, bewitching, presenting falsehood as truth in a very beautiful way so that the people who see it are surprised and confused.

Imam Azhari writes that magic is the name of turning something away from its reality.

Hafiz Ibn Qayyim says that magic is something that is mixed with evil spirits and their physical powers which affects human nature.

Arguments from the Holy Qur’an on the existence of magic!!

Argument No:1

102: Moreover, they follow what the devils fabricated about the kingdom of Sulayman(Solomon). Not that Sulayman(Solomon) himself was faithless, but it was the devils who were faithless. They used to teach people black magic. And it was not sent down upon the two angels named Harut and Marut in Babylon. Yet,these two never taught anyone (anything)without first warning him: ‘We are only a temptation(to test you);do not renounce your faith(by putting trust in black magic).’ However, they learnt(the black magic) from both of them by which they could cause separation between husband and wife, although they harm no one with it except by Allah’s Leave. They learn what harms them and does

not profit them.Though they certainly know that anyone who buys it has no share in the Hereafter. Most evil is that for which they sold their souls.Had they known(this)!

103: But if they had believed and become God Fearing,(even a little) reward from Allah would have been far better (than all these things). If they but knew (this secret)! (al-Baqarah, 2 : 102, 103)

And they followed what the devils taught during the reign of Hazrat Sulayman(A.S) (Solomon). But if they had believed and become God Fearing, (even a little) reward from Allah would have been far better (than all these things). If they knew (this secret)! (A.S) (Solomon) disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved that they used to teach magic to the people.

These verses prove many things.

The Jews made it known that Hazrat Sulayman (A.S) was a sorcerer and his government was based on sorcery. Allah denied it and said that magic is disbelief.Hazrat Sulayman (A.S) was a miraculous prophet, he did not disbelieve, but the devils did this work of disbelief during his reign, that he used magic himself and taught magic to other people.

Where Allah has denied magic to Hazrat Sulaiman (A.S), He has called those who practice magic as Devils. If magic did not exist, Allah Ta’ala would have denied magic to everyone, this also proves that practicing teaching and learning magic is evil and disbelief. It is also proved that magic has an effect, it can hurt others, but the harm of magic is limited only by Allah’s command. If Allah wills, magic works, if Allah does not will, magic does not work.

Argument No:2

Translation:

81: When they threw (their strings and sticks),Musa(Moses) said:‘Whatever you have brought(here) is magic. Allah will surely prove it false right now.Certainly,Allah does not set right the work of the mischief-mongers.

When they(the sorcerers)threw down(their ropes and sticks on the ground),Hazrat Mosa(AS) said, “What you have brought is magic; surely Allah will quickly nullify it.Indeed,Allah does not correct the deeds of the mischief-makers.”.

(Yūnus, 10 : 81)

Arguments from Hadith on the existence of magic!!

Argument No:1

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Avoid the seven great destructive sins.” They (the people!) asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What are they?” He said, “To join partners in worship with Allah; to practice sorcery; to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law); to eat up usury (Riba), to eat up the property of an orphan; to give one’s back to the enemy and

fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.”

This blessed hadith also proves the existence of magic, because magic is prohibited in this hadith.

(Sahi bukhari: 6857) https://sunnah.com/bukhari:6857

And the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) certainly cannot forbid anything that does not exist.

Argument No. 2

Ibn ‘Abbās (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) said: “He who acquires a branch of the knowledge of astrology learns a branch of magic of which he acquires more as long as he continues to do so.”

(Sahiha 5989) https://hadeethenc.com/en/browse/hadith/5989

Since the unseen is known only to Allah, the Prophet (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) forbade all attempts to figure it out.

Astrology is thus forbidden, as it is an attempt to use celestial conditions to predict terrestrial events. The Prophet (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) explained that learning astrology is learning a kind of magic. The more one learns of it, the more magic he learns.

This hadith also proves that magic exists. Magic also happened to the Holy Prophet by the command of Allah.

Argument No. 3

Narrated `Aisha (R.A):

A man called Labid bin al-A’sam from the tribe of Bani Zaraiq worked magic on Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) till Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) started imagining that he had done a thing that he had not really done. One day or one night he was with us, he invoked Allah and invoked for a long period, and then said, “O `Aisha! Do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I have asked him about? Two men came to me and one of them sat near my head and the other near my feet. One of them said to his companion, “What is the disease of this man?” The other replied, “He is under the effect of magic.’ The first one asked, ‘Who has worked the magic on him?’ The other replied, “Labid bin Al-A’sam.’ The first one asked, ‘What material did he use?’ The other replied, ‘A comb and the hairs stuck to it and the skin of pollen of a male date palm.’ The first one asked, ‘Where is that?’ The other replied, ‘(That is) in the well of Dharwan;’ ” So Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) along with some of his companions went there and came back saying, “O `Aisha, the color of its water is like the infusion of Henna leaves. The tops of the date-palm trees near it are like the heads of the devils.” I asked. “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)? Why did you not show it (to the people)?” He said, “Since Allah cured me, I disliked to let evil spread among the people.” Then he ordered that the well be filled up with earth.

(Sahi bukhari: 5763) https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5763

This blessed hadith also proves that magic is a reality and it exists, that’s why the Messenger of Allah(peace and blessings be upon him) was affected by magic.

Some people object to this Hadith that magic cannot be done on the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and if someone does magic, it cannot have any effect. The answer to the objection is that the effect of magic on Prophet Mosa(AS) is proven from the Qur’an.When Pharaoh’s

(Firaun’s) magicians threw their ropes and sticks in the crowd of people, they turned into snakes and started running. The Qur’an has mentioned in these words,

Now Musa (Moses) felt a sort of hidden fear in his heart.

We said (to Musa [Moses]): ‘Do not fear. Verily, you will have the upper hand. (Tāhā, 20 : 67, 68)

If magic is denied only because common sense does not believe, then there are many here that the intellect does not recognize: for example,on the Day of Judgment, the weight of a person’s actions will be weighed in the scale, finer than a hair and sharper than the edge of a sword, people will cross the bridge.

Will the accounts of the Day of Judgment, the affairs of the unseen, consider the affairs of the intellect?

Muslims do not put reason first,

but they put Qur’an and Hadith first, believe in the unseen, religion is not the name of someone’s intellect and speculation,

religion is the name of obeying the commandments of Allah and His Messenger (May Allah Be Pleased With Him).
