Is spiritual chanting against trusting Allah?

Some people say that the treatment of diseases through Sharia Dum (spiritual chanting/reciting verses) and medicine is against trusting Allah, while the evidence of the Qur’an and Hadith and the actions of the prophet’s Companions prove that the treatment of diseases through Sharia Dam (spiritual chanting) and medicine is not against trusting in Allah,or the Exalted. We present to you rational and narrative proofs that will make it absolutely clear that sharia dum (spiritual chanting )and medicine are not contrary to trusting in Allah. The one who trusted Allah the most was the Imam of the Prophets “ Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon HIM)”.

The Holy Prophet(peace and blessings be upon him) used to use means to avoid profit and loss. The command to adopt legitimate sources and means is also in the Qur’an and Hadith.

First of all we try to understand what is trusting Allah (Tawakkul)? Tawakkul is the act of leaving the outcome (results) to Allah Ta’ala after taking all the legitimate means.

A true Muslim should put his complete trust in Allah alone in all situations.Whoever puts his trust in Allah Almighty, Allah will suffice him from every kind of evil, loss, trial, and attack of the enemy.

Reference from Quran:

And He gives him sustenance from a source which he can never think of.And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He(Allah) is

Sufficient for him. Surely, Allah accomplishes His work entirely. He has certainly appointed a measure for everything. (at-Talāq, 65 : 3)

Prophet Mohammad(peace and blessings be upon him) is the best role model for all of us.

Not only Our Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) used to adopt legitimate means, but every human being in the world consciously and unconsciously adopts worldly means, for example, eating, drinking, sleeping, business, etc. All these things are means and causes.

Just as one does not consider it wrong to adopt a worldly cause,in the same way spiritual chanting and taking medicine according to Qur’an and Sunnah are causes.

Spiritual chanting (Dhikr)and medicine should not be considered against trusting Allah(Tawakkul). An example of this can also be considered that eating and drinking is a reason to live,if this reason is not adopted, then life is over.Tawakkul is not done for eating and drinking, but for staying healthy by eating and drinking, and relying on Allah Almighty to maintain health.

If we do not take measures in the affairs of the world, then we cannot move even a step from our place.

Examples of the use of sources or means: Hadidh:

Narrated Az-Zubair bin Al-‘Awwam:

“On the Day of Uhud, the Prophet (ﷺ) wore two coats of mail. https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:1692

Explanation:

If using means was against trusting Allah (Tawakkul), then the (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) would never have worn two armors, but would have fought Jihad without armor.

Hadidh:

It was narrated from Salim, from his father, that the Prophet(ﷺ) said:

“Do not leave fire in your houses when you go to sleep.” https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:3769

Explanation:

There is a risk of accidents by sleeping with candles and lamps burning, something may catch fire in the house, some people use coal rings to heat the room in winter. And some people leave the gas heater on and go to sleep. After turning off the candle, lamp, gas heater, etc. Trust (Tawakkul) should be placed on Allah Ta’ala.

Hadidh:

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:

Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When night falls (or it is evening), keep your children close to you for the devils spread out at that time.”

(Sahi bukhari:3304) https://sunnah.com/bukhari:3304

Explanation:

The reason for keeping children indoors and not going out in the evening is that children are impure and do not have the ability to protect themselves through the remembrance of Allah. The giants and demons have spread outside.Which may cause harm to children. Not allowing the children to leave the house in the evening is to rely on Allah after taking a valid reason.

If someone says that I will not forbid my children from going out of the house in the evening because we only put our trust in Allah. So such a person is also opposing this clear hadith and is also ignorant of the true meaning of trusting Allah(Tawakkul).

Because trust (Tawakkul)is only after taking legitimate reasons/means.

Trust that is done without reasons is also against the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

If it Had been against trust, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not have done spiritual chanting (dhikr) on Sayyiduna(R.A)Hasan and Sayyiduna Hussain (R.A).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) narrates that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) used to blow these verses(spiritual chanting) on Hazrat Hasan (R.A) and Hazrat Hussain (R.A) and used to say that your grandfather Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) also used to blow these verses (spiritual chanting)on Hazrat Ismail (A.S) and Hazrat Ishaq (A.S).

Hadith:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet Mohammad(peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: “Your forefather(i.e. Abraham) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Ishmael and Isaac by reciting the following:’O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye.’ “

(Sahi bukhari 3371) https://sunnah.com/bukhari:3371

If it had been against Tawakkul, the Prophet Mohammad (Peace And Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) would not have ordered a woman named Shifa bint Abdullah to do spiritual chanting (reciting verses).

Hadith:

It was narrated from Abu Bakr bin Sulaiman bin Abi Hatmah

al-Qurshi that an Ansari man got abscess (cyst). He was told that Shafaa bint Abdullah (RA) used to do spiritual chanting to cure abscesses. He came to her and asked her to do spiritual chanting. Shafa’ said: By Allah, I have not done spiritual chanting since I became a Muslim.

He (ansari man ) went to the Messenger of Allah (Peace And Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) and told him what Shafaa had said. The Messenger of Allah (Peace And Blessings Be Upon Him) called Shafaa and said: Recite the verses of Dum (spiritual chanting) in front of me. When she recited those verses, he said: Recite it and teach Hafsah these verses (spiritual chanting) in the

same way as you taught her the book. And in one tradition it is mentioned that she taught her.

(Mustadrak al-Hakim 4/56)

It can be understood from the blessed hadith that if it was against trust (Tawakkul), the Prophet (Peace And Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) would have advised the Ansari Sahabi that it was against trust and he would have forbidden Shafa bint Abdullah to do it forever.

Rather, the Holy Prophet (Peace And Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) ordered his wife Ms.Hafsa to learn this ritual as well. The fact is that there is no harm in doing Islamic ritual, only such ritual is prohibited in which there is shirk.

Hadith:

A’isha (the wife of Allah’s Apostle) said: When Allah’s Messenger (وﺳﻠﻢ ﻋﻠﯿہ ﷲ ﺻﻠﯽ ) fell ill, Gabriel used to recite this: In the name of Allah, may He cure you from all kinds of illnesses and safeguard you from the evil of a jealous one when he feels jealous and from the evil influence of eye.

The one who performs spiritual chanting and the one who has this to be done should have the belief that the effectiveness is by the will of Allah Ta’ala, these words(spiritual chanting) are not effective by themselves.

That is, healing is in the hands of Allah. It is not in these spiritual chantings until if Allah wills,

If He wills he grants healing to the cause of asthma and other diseases. If Allah will not, so healing is not possible.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade only spiritual chanting which involves shirk.

Hadith:

Auf b. Malik Ashja’i reported We practised incantation in the pre-Islamic days and we said: Allah’s Messenger. what is your

opinion about it? He said: Let me know your incantation and said: There is no harm in the incantation which does not smack of polytheism.

(Sahi muslim: 5732) https://hamariweb.com/islam/hadith/sahih-muslim-5732/

This tradition is also a clear proof that if it was against Tawakkul to do spiritual chanting or to be done, then the Holy Prophet (SAW) would have absolutely prevented his companion from spiritual chanting(dum). It is proven from the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) in three ways: verbal, action and speech.

The People who say that taking medicine is against trust. Why do they take measures, why do they lock their house when they leave home?

Why do they lock the car?

Why do they keep an extra tire in the car?

Why do they have a security guard for protection? Why do you eat when you are hungry?

Why do you drink water when you feel thirsty? Why do you sleep when you feel sleepy?

Is this work against trust? Just as adopting all these means is not against trust, nor does anyone consider these actions against trusting Allah (Tawakkul). In the same way, a patient can and does not infringe on Tawakkul if he or she can and does in order to attain health.

Hadith:

Anas bin Malik narrated that a man said:

“O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely (upon Allah), or leave it loose and rely (upon Allah)?” He said:”Tie it and rely (upon Allah).”

(Tirmidhi:2517) https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:2517

Adopting legitimate means is not against trusting Allah (Tawakkul).

One is to adopt means and the other is to trust in means.Adopting means is permissible and proven. In Islam, it is necessary to adopt means. While reliance on causes is a sign of weakness of faith, trust should not be placed on causes but on Allah Himself. But if a person does not cast a spell or chanting, then he holds a high level of trust.

Hadith:

It is in the hadith Mubaraka that seventy thousand people will enter Paradise without reckoning. These are the people who don’t blow the dust.

(Sahih Bukhari: 5705) https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5705

In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah (Peace And Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) said, “I prayed to Allah, or may Allah increase this number, then Allah accepted my prayer.”

According to this sahih hadith, four billion ninety crores and seventy thousand people will go to heaven without accounting. Still, if someone has spiritual chanting to be done, then it is permissible and permitted.

Some scholars say that among those who will go to heaven without reckoning and punishment are also those who commit Sharia dum (spiritual chanting). The list doesn’t include those people who commit Kufriya Shirkiya dum (chanting)
